Cisco's On Stage Telepresence Experience

HSL posted an interesting video re Telepresence at YouTube.

John Chamber and Marthin de Beer giving a speech in India some time ago. Both speakers standing and speak face to face in a close distance. Their voice and movement look normal, but actually only John is real. What we think as Marthin, actually only a '3D' visual representation of the actual person which was separated 14,000 km away.......

Technically speaking, no magic was performed here. When related to SONA, Telepresence is just an application that sits on top of an Intelligent Network (build using SONA framework). Some SONA services that are required to support Telepresence i.e. :

  • Security : ensure that no one could interfere with the Telepresence session
  • Unified Communication : basic services to support Telepresence and other communication media (such as IP Phone)
  • Application Delivery : optimize WAN bandwidth to enable smooth Telepresence sessions
