Yamaha Silent Drum DTXPRESS IV Special Set

The story behind
It is never too late to learn new thing. I never play drum in my whole life (I'm 41 now). I think being able to play drum is cool - so I decided to buy one as a present for myself =P~

There were several drum types that have been considered :

• accoustic drum - the best, but very noisy, and costly (in term of building a special isolated room/studio just to play the unit without the neighbor complaining)
• electronic drum - well..... it's electronic, not accoustic :p
• drum pad - well.... even though the sound may be good, but it just feel like playing a kid's toy
  

I decided to take a drum practice in Yamaha music school in a mall near my home before make any decision. After one week then I finally decided to buy the Yamaha electronic drum :


Yamaha DTXPRESS IV Special Set comes with one drum trigger module (that sounds terrific), hi hat (plus pedal and stand), snare drum, bass drum, 3 cymbals (crash, ride, china), and 3 toms (high, middle, floor). However, different with the accoustic set, the digital one does not come with the bass drum foot pedal and stool...

What I like about the unit

1. Great sound - I can hear a very realistic and powerful sound from my headset (a large sennheiser headphone), enough power from the sound module to blow your hearing away.... The sound (AWM) is nice and not boring for long time play.
   
2. Great feeling - I can play as if I play an accoustic one, but this unit feels nicer. The rubber gives better feel and natural rebound that enable me to play quickly and realistically
   
3. Silent - I can play at home using Hi Fi sound system (small Bose speakers and subwoofer), without any sound isolation, until 4am in the morning. No one outside my room has ever complaining (they barely hear the drum sound with the maximum sound Bose can produce)
4. Multiple zone pads - basically I can hit the pads at different spot and it will sound differently, so I can make open/closed rim shot, head on the snare drum, bell/bow/edge on the cymbal ride & crash... The way we create different sound is very similar with accoustic drum

What I don't like about the unit
Well... even though the unit looks much better compared to the nearest competitor's product (with the same price level), but the accoustic one looks so much better !
